Breaking Barriers: My Journey as a Divorce Coach in Houston’s Muslim Community
Jan 02, 2025Last week marked a milestone in my journey as The Muslimah Divorce Coach. I introduced myself to my local Houston community for the very first time. As a vendor at the MASCON Houston bazaar, I stepped out from behind the virtual space where my work began and into the vibrant network of in-person community engagement.
Preparing for the Big Day
The days leading up to the bazaar were a whirlwind of preparation. I wanted my booth to reflect the heart of my work as The Muslimah Divorce Coach: creating a welcoming space for introspection connection, and growth. Crafting materials that authentically represented my mission took intentional thought. How could I spark meaningful conversations with passersby, especially in a community where the topic of divorce often carries stigma?
This wasn’t just about showcasing what I do—it was about fostering understanding and breaking the taboo around discussing marital relationships and divorce. I approached the challenge with determination, knowing the sensitivity and importance of addressing our ummah’s needs for well-being and healthy, thriving relationships.
The Day of the Event
The bazaar was alive with energy—families, vendors, and curious attendees filled the space. My booth, with its bold signage reading "To Divorce or Not To?", evoked a range of reactions.
Some avoided eye contact, walking away as if acknowledging the word "divorce" might ibe a kin to a sin, even though there is an entire chapter in the Quran titled “Divorce”. Others stopped, intrigued but cautious. One father lingered in front of my booth with his family, clearly curious, while his adult daughters urged him to move along. Moments like this were opportunities to share my work in a way that made it relatable and approachable.
When his wife remarked, “We don’t need that,” I responded warmly, “Alhamdulillah, Inshallah, you never will.” This interaction was a reminder: my work is not about wishing challenges upon anyone but offering support to those who face them in addition to cultivating healthy relationships.
Breaking the Stigma
The stigma surrounding divorce was palpable that day. Some hurried past my booth, visibly uncomfortable. Yet many engaged deeply, asking questions and opening up. These conversations revealed a profound need for support in navigating marital challenges, whether for themselves or loved ones.
I was particularly moved by the courage of brothers who approached me, seeking guidance on making decisions about divorce that align with Islamic values and personal needs. These honest and vulnerable conversations reminded me that while my focus is supporting women, men too need spaces to heal and navigate marital challenges.
Building Connections and Growing Together
The bazaar was not only about connecting with individuals seeking support. It was also a chance to bond with fellow entrepreneurs, all united in a shared mission to serve and uplift the community. The camaraderie and mutual encouragement created a sense of belonging that energized my mission even more.
A First Step, Not the Last
This experience reaffirmed the importance of my work. While reactions ranged from curiosity to hesitation and enthusiasm, the takeaway was clear: discussions around divorce, marital challenges, and well being are desperately needed in our community.
I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to share my journey and connect with others. This is just the beginning. I look forward to continuing to break barriers, foster understanding, and offer support, Inshallah.
To my sisters navigating marital crossroads and seeking empowered choices: You are not alone. And to my Houston community: Thank you for your warmth and encouragement. Together, we can build a stronger, more supportive future.
